We distribute both for good reason. These aren't the same product with different labels, they answer different questions. StoneFly Server Plus+ suits customers who want unified storage (block, file, and object) with hypervisor flexibility, especially Proxmox VE. StarWind HCI Appliance is tuned for the simplest possible two-node HA cluster with VSAN mirroring, aimed at VMware or Hyper-V shops that want a turnkey BCDR-ready HCI. Neither is better; the right choice depends on the customer's hypervisor strategy and storage requirements.
Server Plus+ is a Super Micro-based HCI appliance with StoneFly's software-defined storage stack pre-integrated. Supports Proxmox VE, VMware ESXi, and Hyper-V as the hypervisor, and inherits the unified storage capabilities (block, file, object) of the StoneFly family.
StarWind HCI Appliance combines pre-configured Super Micro or Dell/HPE hardware with StarWind VSAN software to deliver a turnkey two-node HA cluster. The product is tuned for VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V, with StarWind's ProActive Support doing day-two operations for subscribed partners.

We've been asked this more than once: if Server Plus+ and StarWind HCI both sit in the CRS line card, don't they compete?
They don't, or at least not in the customer situations we actually see. Partners ask for two distinct shapes of HCI answer. One is 'give me the simplest possible two-node cluster, VMware or Hyper-V, that I can drop into a branch office with a witness node elsewhere and forget about'. The other is 'give me three or more nodes of HCI with unified block, file, and object storage, and let me pick the hypervisor'.
StarWind HCI Appliance is the answer to the first question. StoneFly Server Plus+ is the answer to the second. Both are legitimate needs, both get serviced well by the respective product, and both partners end up happy with the deployment they bought.
StarWind's architecture is organised around a simple premise: most branch, edge, and mid-market sites need HA, not scale. Two nodes mirroring storage to each other, with a witness somewhere (can be on a lightweight cloud VM or a different site) to break split-brain, is a complete HA cluster. StarWind has been refining this pattern for over a decade and the appliance reflects that focus.
ProActive Premium Support is the other half of the story. StarWind's support team remote-monitors subscribed clusters, proactively identifies issues, and often resolves them before the customer notices. For MSP partners running a fleet of two-node sites across multiple customers, this model materially reduces the operational overhead.
The trade-off is narrower flexibility. VSAN is block-storage mirroring; if the customer needs file or object, those are separate products. The hypervisor footprint is VMware and Hyper-V primarily; Proxmox works but the integration isn't as polished. For the two-node HA use case, these trade-offs don't matter. For broader HCI requirements, they do.
Server Plus+ is a different pattern. Instead of optimising for the simplest two-node case, it optimises for unified storage and hypervisor flexibility on clusters of typically 3-8 nodes. The StoneFly SDS stack serves block (iSCSI, FC), file (NFS, SMB), and object (S3) from the same appliance, so a single cluster can back VMware VMs on iSCSI, Windows file shares over SMB, and an S3 archive tier without additional storage products.
Hypervisor choice is open. Proxmox VE is the most interesting pairing right now, the StoneFly SDS + Proxmox combination delivers a full HCI stack at commodity-hardware pricing with an open-source hypervisor. VMware and Hyper-V are equally supported.
The trade-off is that Server Plus+ isn't as optimised for the simplest two-node case. It works at two nodes, but the sweet spot is 3+. And the management model is distributed (storage via StoneFly Command Center, compute via the hypervisor) rather than unified.

We scope against the customer requirement rather than the vendor preference. When a partner brings us an HCI opportunity, the first conversation is about node count, hypervisor, and storage protocols. That conversation usually points clearly at one of the two appliances.
