Super Scale-Out NAS (SSO)
Scale-Out NAS for Unprecedented Performance and Petabyte Scalability
The StoneFly SSO is a scale-out NAS platform built for massive amounts of unstructured data — think video, images, documents, research data, and surveillance footage. Unlike traditional NAS that hits a ceiling and forces a forklift upgrade, the SSO uses a distributed architecture where you simply add more nodes as data grows. Each new node adds both capacity and throughput linearly, so performance scales with your data.
The numbers are impressive: up to 18GB/s throughput and 6 million IOPS across the cluster, with individual nodes supporting up to 256 drives (2.5 petabytes each) and virtually unlimited cluster size. Automated tiering across NVMe, SAS, and cloud tiers optimises disk utilisation up to 80%, and immutable FileLock prevents ransomware from tampering with or deleting files.
For Australian organisations dealing with large-scale content — media production houses, surveillance operations, research institutions, oil and gas companies — the SSO delivers the kind of raw performance and scale that typically requires Dell PowerScale (Isilon) money. StoneFly gets you there at a significantly lower cost per petabyte.

Security
Immutable FileLock, ransomware protection
Namespace
Single global namespace across all nodes
The SSO goes up against Dell PowerScale (formerly Isilon) and HPE StoreEasy — the two dominant scale-out NAS platforms in the enterprise market. Dell PowerScale is excellent technology, but the licensing and support costs are eye-watering, particularly for Australian deployments where support contracts carry a geographic premium. The SSO delivers comparable scale-out architecture, global namespace, and performance at a dramatically lower cost per petabyte. If you need Isilon-class NAS without the Dell price tag, the SSO deserves serious consideration.
One of the advantages of working with CRS — we can recommend the best combination of vendors for your specific needs.
