QSAN XCubeNAS 5100R — Capacity-Optimised Single-Controller Rackmount NAS
Capacity-optimised rack NAS for SMB.
The QSAN XCubeNAS 5100R series is the capacity-optimised, cost-effective sibling to the [8100R](/vendors/qsan/products/xcubenas-8100r). Same QSM 4 software stack, same multi-layer security, same multi-PB scalability via XCubeDAS — but with optional 10GbE host-card networking instead of built-in quad 10GbE SFP+, giving Australian SMBs and remote offices a lower entry price for capacity-intensive workloads.
The compact chassis generates a small carbon footprint and remains versatile for storage and expansion across general-purpose deployments. Hybrid SSD cache accelerates I/O when needed; the underlying chassis is media-inline ready for capacity-driven file workloads. Multi-protocol QSM 4 (AFP, CIFS, FTP, iSCSI, NFS, WebDAV) plus Windows AD / LDAP / ACL plus the built-in security stack (WORM at folder level, pool encryption, SED at folder/pool/drive) deliver enterprise-grade controls at SMB pricing.
For Australian customers building backup repositories, departmental file servers, or low-I/O archive targets where the 8100R's built-in 10GbE is over-provisioned, the 5100R is the right answer. For higher-throughput workloads, step up to the 8100R or move to a dual-active unified array like the [XN3 series](/vendors/qsan/products/xn3-series).

Controllers
Single controller (rackmount form factor)
Drive Bays
12-bay (XN5112R / XN5112RE) or 4-bay (XN5104R)
Networking
Optional 10GbE host card (vs built-in quad 10GbE on 8100R)
Operating System
QSM 4 — 128-bit ZFS-based unified management
Protocols
AFP, CIFS, FTP, iSCSI, NFS, WebDAV with Windows AD / LDAP / ACL
Security
WORM at folder level, pool encryption, SED at folder / pool / drive
Storage Efficiency
Hybrid SSD cache, deduplication, compression, thin provisioning
Scalability
Multi-PB via XCubeDAS expansion
The 5100R competes against Synology RS3621xs+ and similar capacity-tier QNAP rack NAS. Same trade-offs as the 8100R: QSAN brings QSM 4 ZFS data integrity and a deeper security stack; competitors bring larger app ecosystems. For Australian customers prioritising data integrity and security over breadth-of-apps, the 5100R is the cost-effective choice in capacity-driven deployments.
One of the advantages of working with CRS — we can recommend the best combination of vendors for your specific needs.
NAKIVO
XCubeNAS 5100R serves as a NAKIVO backup repository over NFS or SMB with WORM-protected retention.
Keepit
Keepit covers SaaS data in the cloud while XCubeNAS 5100R hosts on-prem file shares and backup archives.
Proxmox
Proxmox VE clusters use XCubeNAS 5100R for ISO libraries, templates, and lower-I/O VM workloads.
StoneFly Cloud Vault & Cloud Storage
Tier cold data from XCubeNAS 5100R to StoneFly Secure Cloud Vault for cost-effective long-term retention with AU data sovereignty.
Where the Money Goes in a Tier-One Storage Quote
Branded drives and renewals are where a tier-one storage array actually costs you. A look at how QSAN structures it differently, and what that changes.
VSAN vs SAN: Which is Best for You?
SAN and vSAN solve the same problem — shared storage for your virtual machines — in very different ways. Here is how to tell which one fits your environment.
