StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN)
Hardware-Agnostic Software-Defined Storage That Replaces Your SAN
StarWind Virtual SAN is the product that put StarWind on the map — and post-Broadcom, it's the product sending VMware shops scrambling for alternatives. VSAN creates a fully fault-tolerant, high-performance shared storage pool by mirroring the internal disks and flash drives across your existing hypervisor servers. No external SAN. No NAS. No proprietary hardware. Just software that turns commodity servers into enterprise-grade shared storage.
The killer feature is genuine 2-node high availability without a witness. VMware vSAN requires a third witness node for a 2-node cluster — StarWind doesn't. If one node goes down, the other keeps running with zero data loss and zero interruption. That alone saves you a server and a vSAN licence. It runs directly inside the hypervisor as a lightweight service or VM, supporting VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Proxmox VE, and KVM. No proprietary hypervisor lock-in, no Hardware Compatibility Lists dictating what drives you can buy.
Performance is genuinely impressive for a software-defined solution. RAM-based write-back caching, in-line deduplication and compression, and support for NVMe-oF alongside traditional iSCSI, NFS, and SMB3 protocols mean you're not sacrificing speed for flexibility. For remote offices, branch offices, and edge deployments where you need shared storage but can't justify the cost of a physical SAN — or the post-Broadcom price tag on VMware vSAN — StarWind VSAN is the straightforward answer.

This is where StarWind thrives — and Broadcom has handed them the opportunity on a silver platter. VMware vSAN was already expensive, but post-acquisition the licensing model has become genuinely hostile. Broadcom killed perpetual licences, bundled vSAN into inflated subscription packages, and raised effective per-socket costs dramatically. Many Australian organisations are paying two to three times what they were a year ago for the same VMware stack. StarWind VSAN is the direct replacement. It delivers the same core capability — software-defined shared storage for virtualisation clusters — without the licensing nightmare. Key advantages over VMware vSAN: no mandatory witness node for 2-node clusters (saving hardware and licensing), no restrictive Hardware Compatibility List (buy whatever drives make sense), and RAM-based caching that VMware restricts to flash only. Against Microsoft Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), StarWind provides proper 2-node split-brain handling and in-line deduplication with ReFS that Microsoft doesn't offer — plus you avoid the mandatory Windows Server Datacenter licence per node. Against Nutanix, StarWind has a dramatically lighter footprint and lower cost for small edge deployments, without forcing you onto the proprietary AHV hypervisor.
One of the advantages of working with CRS — we can recommend the best combination of vendors for your specific needs.
